Summer Lovin’ Skin Toners
Watch Intelligent-SkinSense creator Marlene Katz discuss at home care.

Summer months bring heat, sweat, sun damage, and over oily skin.  Luckily there are products for each of those problems. One that helps, is a toner. Understanding how toners work and knowing what ingredients are included in some toners is essential for achieving a healthy, radiant glow.  You will also find that applying a toner can be the perfect addition to your summer skincare routine and help to balance your skin.
Toners can be used after cleansing the skin. Before cleansers were water-soluble and gentle on the skin, toners were created as a way to restore skin's pH balance after using harsh bar soaps or bar type cleanser because those types of cleansers raise the skin's natural pH to a level that is not healthy or safe for your skin. Now, cleansers are pH balanced.
What your skin needs daily is a range of ingredients that restore and repair its surface. That is why most of us have many products and a daily regime for each season. Ingredients in most skin toners are so natural that our skin will absorb the minerals and oils safely. The right toner can give your skin a healthy dose of what it needs to look younger, fresher, and smoother, right after cleansing and throughout the day.

Toners can fall into three categories. It is important depending on your skin type, to chose the correct one.  To be safe though, use a water-based toner in the summer. With the heat and sun, our skin needs to stay hydrated.

1.     Alcohol-based formulas: often include astringent agents. Toners with alcohol and astringent ingredients can cause photosensitivity and irritation.
2.     Water and glycerin or glycol-based formulas with fragrant extracts: such as rose water or citrus fruits. These types of toners often are labeled fresheners or clarifiers.
3.     Water-based formulas: loaded with beneficial ingredients such as skin-repairing substancesantioxidants, and cell-communicating ingredients

If you are uncertain about which you would get or prefer to make a toner yourself, here are some recipes for you based off skin type.
